Concept of Tawakkul (Trust in Allah): Quranic Guidance and Hadees

وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ

Tawakkul — complete trust and reliance upon Allah — is one of the highest spiritual stations in Islam. It does not mean passive abandonment of effort, but rather taking all necessary means while placing the heart’s attachment entirely upon Allah for the outcome.

Quranic Basis

Allah says: “And whoever relies upon Allah — then He is sufficient for him.” (Quran 65:3) This verse is among the most comforting in the entire Quran, assuring the believer that true reliance on Allah is never disappointed. Ibn Kathir explains this means that whoever truly depends on Allah, He will manage all of their affairs.

The Camel Hadith

A Bedouin once asked the Prophet صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم: “Should I tie my camel and then rely on Allah, or should I leave it and rely on Allah?” The Prophet replied: “Tie it and then rely on Allah.” (Tirmidhi 2517) This profound teaching establishes that tawakkul means combining action with reliance — not abandoning one for the other.

Levels of Tawakkul

Islamic scholars identify three levels: (1) reliance with a heart that sometimes wanders (the common believer), (2) consistent reliance with full trust in Allah’s wisdom (the pious), and (3) complete absorption in Allah where one no longer even thinks of the creation for their needs (the awliya, or friends of Allah). Ibn al-Qayyim dedicated an entire chapter to this topic in his masterpiece “Madarij al-Salikin.”
